2023 The Age of Grace Viognier, Lismore Estate, Cape South Coast

Viognier

The Age of Grace Viognier is a beautifully balanced, barrel fermented white wine from the cool climate vineyards of the Cape South Coast.  Gentle, whole bunch pressing and slow extraction helps maintain the character and quality of the juice.  The wine is settled for 48 hours before 70% being racked into seasoned 225 litre French Oak barrels, the remainder into concrete egg for fermentation and ageing 10 months.

The Zevenwacht Tin Mine White is a stunning blend of Chenin, Chardonnay, Roussanne, Viognier and Semillon, coming from vineyards planted on decomposed granite soils which lie between 200 and 350m above sea level.  Ageing in 500 litre French oak barrels helps add to the wonderful texture without detracting from the impeccably integrated exotic, spicey fruit and lively yet balanced acidity.

Here's something you don't come across everyday...a Nebbiolo/Cabernet blend that is fermented and aged in concrete egg.  The choice of fermentation vessel aids circulation during teh ferment which imparts depth, volume and texture to the resultant wine.  This fabulous wine not only has a cool, egg-shaped label, but drinks beautifully - showing bright acidity and a lovely balance between sweet blackcurrant fruit and something altogether more savoury and herbal. Fabiano's vineyards are located in the northern part of Verona , an area characterised by hills with mineral rich soils that slope towards Adige river. This is serious stuff from Fabiano with youthful Valpolicella being passed over the pressings left from the Amarone fermentation, resulting in a wine that has a wonderful balance of freshness and concentration with vibrant cherry fruit and rich, raisiny structure and firm drying tannins.

The Lo & Behold white is very grown up for such a humble price tag.  Made from 90% Chenin Blanc, 10% of which is aged in french oak, the remainder naturally fermented in stainless steel, plus 10% Viognier that is fermented in cement tanks.  The wine is blended before bottling, resulting in a fresh and vibrant wine with citrus and pear fruit alongside more tropical notes.  The finish is long and balanced and leaves one wanting more!
