Description

The 2018 Ilogica Criolla, Agustin  Lanus use the Criolla grape variety which  provides something a little different from Argentina, making a lighter style of red with enticing aromatics of red fruits, predominantly strawberries & raspberries, as well as a hint of dates, dried rose petals and subtle spice.

The concentration that comes from grapes grown at high altitude shows through on the plush and richly fruited, though elegant palate, giving a quite unique wine.  The winemaking is traditional with fermented in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts. No oak is used at any stage and only a minimum of suplhur is used before the wine is matured for 10 months in cement tanks.

In 2006 Agustin Lanus decided to explore  the upper Calchaqui Valley Argentina for the first time with the specific goal of learning more about the unique micro-terroirs found at extreme altitudes. These terroirs, ranging from 1,650 to 3,100 meters above sea level, host some of the highest vineyards in the world and are where Agustin grows grapes for his intriguing wines.

“Many say that driving 9 hours into the mountains on dangerous dirt roads just to check on our grapes is crazy, but then they try the wine and they understand.” – Agustín Lanús

Morgon Cochard Cote de Py.JPG

2020 morgon cote de py, domaine grange cochard

Gamay

The Morgon Cote de Py is a wonderful example of hand crafted Cru Beaujolais from the prestigious Cote de Py plateau.  Made with organically grown, hand harvested grapes from a mixture of Granite and blue stone soils, the wine is made in the traditional semi-carbonic method with 2/3rds of the bunches being de-stemmed and 1/3rd left whole.  The wine is matured in a mixture of cask and old barrels and bottled with minimal sulphur without fining.  The result is a wonderfully complex wine that is expressive yet elegant and finely balanced.  Dark fruits and kirsch like characters mingle with dried herbs, liquorice and mineral undertones along with finely poised acidity which helps the wine remain focussed.  Delicious in it's youth, the Cote de Py also shows great ageing potential in the medium term and will continue to develop in complexity.

Chardonnay

Wow, Bride Valley have truly excelled in this vintage with their Blanc de Blancs.  Distinctly elegant with a beautifully balanced citrus and creamy palate, notes of toasty brioche with green apple and stone fruit.  Crisp and fresh initially, the palate builds to give a well rounded, textured wine with a zesty, sherbert tinged finish.  It is a deserved winner of multiple awards including a Gold at the IEWA (Independent English Wine Awards) and also the coveted 'Best in Show'.

Pinot Noir

The 2021 Pinot Noir Rose, Villa Wolf has a short period on the skins to create a beautiful pale salmon pink colour, the juice is run off and fermented at a cool temperature in stainless steel.  The wine is a beautiful balance of generous juicy red fruits, hints of mineral undertones and crisp, thirst quenching acidity. This is one to be filed in the 'Dangerously Drinkable' category.
