Gosset is the oldest wine house in Champagne. It was founded in Aÿ in 1584 by Pierre Gosset an alderman and wine-grower who made mostly red wines. At that time the region’s still wines competed for pride of place on the best tables of France with the wines of Beaune which were made from the same grape varieties as they are today.

Pinot Noir

The Levasseur vineyards are organically farmed and certified for their high environmental value, and produce a mere 30,000 bottles per year. The Noir de Terroir is made with 100% Pinot Noir and shows distinctive Strawberry, redcurrant and Nectarine fruit on the nose. The complex palate is well-structured with a fine mousse and long finish. This is outstanding grower champagne and highlights what fantastic value you ccan get when you stray from the well-trodden path of the bigger houses.

Germar Breton are a relatively young Champagne House that started in 2005.  Based in the southerly Aube region, they make approachable, terrific value wines solely from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, eschewing the use of Pinot Meunier as they believe that it brings a harshness ot the final wine.

Wow, Bride Valley have truly excelled in this vintage with their Blanc de Blancs.  Distinctly elegant with a beautifully balanced citrus and creamy palate, notes of toasty brioche with green apple and stone fruit.  Crisp and fresh initially, the palate builds to give a well rounded, textured wine with a zesty, sherbert tinged finish.  It is a deserved winner of multiple awards including a Gold at the IEWA (Independent English Wine Awards) and also the coveted 'Best in Show'.

The nose is complex with ripe gala apple and poached pear. Some floral notes of apple blossom and honey suckle. A seriousness here too, with wet beach pebbles and toasted granary bread. A well-integrated orchard fruit acidity. Confected apple, some creaminess and great texture. A lovely salinity and citrus balances well. Some light brioche and almond notes too.

Pinot Noir

Fournillon have 23 hectares of vines in Chablis in the cool, north of burgundy and are predominantly producers of classic, steely Chablis (see our fantastic value 'house' Chablis), but they also produce some red and this delicious cremant from 100% Pinot Noir.  All fruit is hand-harvested and vinified carefully to produce an easy drinking, fruit-forward fizz that is well balanced and nicely rounded with a fine mousse.  Excellent as an apertif.

2019 pet nat ‘il pestifero’, bianco frizzante

Verdicchio

Il Pestifero, the 'naughty boy' Pét-Nat, is part of Tavignano's 'I Love Monsters' line devoted to rediscovering older, traditional winemaking methods through modern technologies. The organic grapes are hand harvested with only the top quality selected, before primary vinification at a controlled temperature. The wine is bottled with residual sugar and undergoes a natural second fermentation in bottle for a period of two months. It is not disgorged or filtered.

The 2019 Riesling Sekt Trocken, Hanewald-Schwerdt is a steely lemon with red apple and peach underpinned by zesty lime acidity, resulting in a lovely refreshing style.  This is by no means binde dry though, and with 23grams of residual sugar this a fruitier style that is a great alternative to Prosecco for those looking for something a little different.

Villa Sandi make a wonderfully elegant  and fresh style of Prosecco, thanks partially to a cold soak of the grapes prior to fermentation.  Pretty pale pink in colour coming from a gentle pressing of the grapes, this delicious Prosecco has a bright and floral nose, leading to a delicate palate which is soft, rounded and wonderfully easy drinking.

The grapes for the Lete Vautrain Brut 204 are harvested by hand and sorted prior to fermentation at a cool temperature, and ageing on lees takes place for a minimum of 36 months.  The wine shows a lovely deep golden hue in the glass with apple, peach and apricot fruit complemented by dried fruits and classic biscuity notes.  A well balanced, complex and rounded Champagne that is the perfect aperitif style.
