Switzerland
Across Switzerland there are many passionate winemakers creating exceptional wines.
The country has a winemaking history dating back 2000 years but we don’t know a lot about them in the UK as very little is exported. Switzerland has a reputation for being a wealthy country and their wines aren’t exactly the cheapest on the market. However, the quality of the wine coming out of Switzerland is superb, with producers working hard to produce wine with a real story behind it. There are thousands of acres under vine across Switzerland, worked by full and part time growers, and it would seem that all the Swiss either know a vine grower or are one themselves! These growers have impeccable plots of land that are farmed with a keen eye to sustainability and the environment, with little in the way of commercial farming. The Swiss have some of the highest and prettiest vineyards in Europe, making wines with a wonderful purity and freshness.
The most productive canton is Valais followed by Vaud and, some way behind, is the popular destination of Geneva. Currently there are over 200 wine grapes grown across this small country. These popular areas mainly plant white grapes, with the most popular one being the Chasselas which is a relatively neutral grape. Red wines are grown from varieties such as Pinot Noir, Blauburgunder and Clevener and are generally light, fresh and approachable in style.

2019 Mont Sur Rolle Grand Cru, Dom. de Maison Blanche, Half Bt
Chasselas
This is a delicious, more'ish white made mainly from Chasselas, the grape variety which is typical to the Canton of Vaud. Yves and Antoine de Mestral like to play around with it, making wine several different styles, of which this was our favourite. Quite classic in style for Chasselas with a lovely balance of the creamy, fruity, floral and mineral palate. Rich and complex, this is a perfect wine to sip on its own, enjoy with fish and seafood.

Gamaret Garanoir
Grown on the northern shores of Lake Geneva this wonderful blend of Gamaret and Garanoir provides something a little different for the curious drinker. Medium-bodied yet with an underlying power, there's an almost exotic fruit character with blueberry, dark cherry and blackberry too. Quite mellow tannins are mingled with smokey spice on the well balanced finish. This is such a versatile wine and can certainly take a bit of chilling down in the summer months. It's also great with food and can even handle a fiery curry!
