Spain

There was a time when Spanish wine was more about oak ageing than anything else but things have changed dramatically since the ‘old days’ and this gastronomic powerhouse of a country are producing a vast array of styles, both modern and traditional, which are guaranteed to thrill the modern drinker.  Rioja still rules the roost in terms of notoriety, making classic medium to full bodied red wines from mainly Tempranillo and Granacha.  The fashion these days is to let the fruit come to the fore and use oak in a supportive role.  Ribera del Duero and Priorat join Rioja in the triumvirate of most respected red wine regions in Spain, with the likes of Ribeira Sacra and Bierzo in Galicia providing fresh, perfumed and inviting wines made from the Mencia grape.  La Mancha in central Spain still provides excellent value red and white wines for everyday drinking from a mix of international and indigenous grape varities and as we move further east to the Mediterranean, Monastrell and Bobal dominates.  Spain is also producing some remarkable white wines, notably from cooler regions such as Galicia from the Albarino and Godello grapes, Rueda where Verdejo is most prominent and produces vibrant, Sauvignon’esque white wine and Penedes where the likes of Xarello and Parellada make refreshing, medium bodied whites.
