Portugal

Nestled between Spain and the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal has carved a niche for itself in the wine world by championing its indigenous grape varieties rather than following fashion and planting international ones.  Touriga Nacional, principally grown in the Douro for both Port and table wines is perhaps the countries most important red grape.  The deeply coloured reds from Alicante Bouschet, the lighter, perfumed Jaen (known as Mencia in Spain), Baga in Bairrada and Tinto Roriz grow in vineyards up and down the country from Dao to the Alentejo, are all making distinctive wines which are gaining in popularity with each vintage.  Portugal is also home to some intriguing white wines too.  From the damp and cool vineyards of Minho which is Vinho Verde country to the warmer climates further south, one can find complex, exciting white wines made from Sercial, Viosinho, Fernao Pires and Gouveio.  Undoubtedly, the fortified wines of Oporto, or Port as we brits know it, are Portugal’s most famous vinuous export and the long standing trading history between Britain and Portugal led to the establishment of many British owned Port houses which are still major players today. The likes of Taylors, Grahams and Smith & Woodhouse are still vital to the Port trade but we must also condsider the smaller, less well known houses who produce amazing wines which can sometimes come under the radar.  Quinta Gaivosa, Niepoort and Quinta Eirados to name a few, all produce wonderfully crafted fortified and still wines that provide wonderful drinking.  All in all, Portuguese wines, whether fortified or not, provide the adventurous drinker with plenty to get excited about.

After studying viticulture in Bordeaux and his native Portugal, acquiring additional properties and constructing a modern cellar at Quinta da Gaivosa, he released his first vintage in 1991. Since then, Domingos and his wines have gained critical acclaim. Notably, he was named “Producer of the Year” by Revista de Vinhos in 1999 and 2007, and is the only person to have won this prestigious award twice.
