Lebanon

The story of the Lebanese wine industry is fascinating and is one of triumph in the face of adversity.  At the eastern end of the Mediterranean, bordered by Syria to the north and east, and Israel to the south, Lebanon is similar in size to Wales.  The Bekaa Valley is flanked by two mountain ranges and enjoys  favourable geographic and climactic conditions for the production of grapes.  Further south than any part of Spain or Italy the region enjoys abundant sunshine during summer allowing the grapes to ripen fully whilst the 1000m altitude provides cool nights to promote even ripeness.  Chateau Musar is the most prominent producer in the region and has paved the way for plenty of other wineries to grow and flourish.  The most prominent red grape varieties grown in Lebanon are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan whilst the whites can be made from a wide range of grapes such as Chardonnay, Semillon, Vermentino and Viognier, amongst others.  Critically acclaimed and unique, the wines of Lebanon are definitely worth exploring.

2016 chateau musar, bekaa valley

Red Blend

The 2016 vintage of Musar is a deep ruby in colour with high viscosity. Red cherries, plums, carob and figs dominate the nose with a hint of eastern spice. Kirsch and plums follow through to the palate with blackcurrant and chocolate. The tannins are velvety soft and this wine has a lot of depth and fruit concentration with a long finish.

Oumsyat Assyrtiko.JPG

2019 assyrtiko, chateau oumsiyat, bekaa valley

Assyrtiko

Passion and heritage has been passed down through the Bou Sleiman family for four generations. When Joseph Bou Sleiman took over the reins at Château Oumsiyat, he blended respect for local tradition with modern techniques to craft contemporary wines. A passionate vine grower, Joseph also built a modern winery in the village of Mtein, where he creates wines that are a fusion of old world and new world . The grapes are grown in the 78 hectare vineyard, situated at over 1,000 metres elevation in the beautiful Bekaa Valley, between Mount Lebanon to the west and the Anti-Lebanon Mountains to the east.

Musar Jeune.JPG

2019 jeune rouge, chateau musar, bekaa valley

Syrah/Shiraz

This wine is deep purple in colour with aromas of cherry, ripe berry fruits and violet notes on the nose. On the palate it is unoaked wine, wonderfully fresh and full of ripe blueberry fruit. Good acidity keeps the wine vibrant within a medium to full bodied textured palate. The 2019 vintage is fresh and fruity and designed to be enjoyed in its youth.

Massaya Rouge.JPG

2019 massaya red le colombier 75cl

Cinsault

Massaya is run by brothers Sami and Ramzi Ghosn in partnership with Frédéric and Daniel Brunier from Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe and Dominique Hebrard, formerly from Château Cheval Blanc. Until recently Massaya’s vineyards have solely been located in the fertile Bekaa Valley, at an altitude of 1000 metres above sea level. However, over the last seven years Sami and Ramzi together with Frédéric and Daniel Brunier, have developed Massaya vineyards in the more extreme, mineral areas of the Bekaa valley, moving onto hillside sites to the North East (Ras Baalbek) and North West (Hadath Baalbek), as well as further north of Baalbek.
