Greece
Greece is one of the worlds most ancient viticultural locations, with reference to consumption and cultivation dating back to the 17th Century BC. Many original indigenous grape varieties are still produced across Greece today.
Retsina used to be the countrys most famous grape variety but thankfully times have changed! There is a move among growers to champion indigenous grapes which bodes well for the adventurous drinker. Greece has more than 300 indigenous grape varieties; Assyrtiko, Xinomavro, Robola and Liatiko being the main ones drawing attention for their world class quality.
Of all the Greek islands Crete is the largest wine producer, with the best vineyards found at altitude. Santorini produces the most beguiling and intense white from Assyrtiko. The wines tend to be expensive, but fall firmly in the Fine Wine category. The area with the most unrealised potential is the north of mainland Greece, which is predominantly red wine country. This area is dominated by the Xinomavro grape variety, which continues to yield characterful wines true to their origin.
