French Country Wines

French country wines (vin de pays) covers a vast style range. The sheer diversity of grapes available from wines grown outside the more illustrious wine growing regions in France is sometimes mind-boggling.
Hugging the mediterranean coast in the south of France, the Languedoc produces a vast array of styles.  From the Rhone’esque rich red and white wines based on Syrah, Carignan, Grenache and Mouvedre as well as Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier to the more Bordelais structure in the west of the region.  The region has also seen an influx of winemaking talent, both from the rest of France, but more notably from ‘flying winemakers’ looking for a second vintage. Perhaps ironically the influx of ‘new world’ winemaking talent has also meant an influx of new techniques and alot of the traditional ‘fusty’ style of wines that used to come from this part of the country are now a thing of the past.

2019 Bordeaux Blanc Sec, Chateau Saransot-Dupre

Semillon/Sauvignon
