Burgundy and Beaujolais
Burgundy is home to the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grown in France, with both red and white burgundy wines providing the benchmark to which winemakers around the word strive to reach.
This fragmented region is not nearly as flashy as Bordeaux, with virtually none of the big Chateaux that you would see France’s ‘other’ fine wine region. Burgundy is dominated by small holdings, with the average grower owning roughly 7.5 hectares of vineyards, largely as a result of the Napoleonic laws of succession. It is a gastronomic melting pot with a wealth of amazing local produce which the wines compliment.
From Chablis in the north, heading south through the Cote d’Or and Cote de Beaune to the Cote Chalonnaise and on down to Macon, both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay make a myriad of different styles of wine from the various vineyards and villages, all enjoying their own unique terroirs.
In the south, Burgundy overlaps with the mainly red wine growing region of Beaujolais. Once derided as simple and uninteresting, it is the Gamay grape that shines when grown on the granite soils of the Beaujolais Villages. Light, but often intriguing and always extremely drinkable, the wonderful red wines of the Beaujolais Villages and Crus such as Julienas, Fleurie, Morgon and Moulin a Vent (amongst others) have come on in leaps and bounds and are proof that the marriage of the right grape, planted on the right soils can produce soemthing very special.

The vineyards are worked by hand, by horse and by tractor, and without the use of any agrochemicals. Cheveau is one of the few vignerons who do not fertilize either, choosing to use sward management to stop soil erosion and keep a balance of nutrients in the soil. His vineyards can always be recognised for being meticulously looked after, but fizzing with life.
